The puzzle is often a real head-scratcher, so you will be pleased to know that Wordle‘s creator struggles just as much as we do.

Wordle, a word guessing game, was created by Brooklyn-based Welsh software designer Josh Wardle in 2021 In a real act of true love, he designed the game for his puzzle-loving girlfriend before putting the game up on the internet in October 2021.

Such was the game’s popularity, it was snapped up by The New York Times for a seven-figure sum in January 2022. Since then, the game’s popularity has continued to boom; its 1,000th puzzle was celebrated in March of this year.

However, despite being the initial brains behind it, Wardle freely admits he is by no means an expert at the game.

During an interview with Newsweek, Wardle said: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.”

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wardle added that he has no inside scoop on what the words of the day will be.

“When I designed the game, it was for me and my partner to enjoy, so I made sure that all of the entries were randomized. In other words, I don’t actually know what tomorrow’s word is going to be, which means that I can take part like everybody else,” Wardle told Newsweek.

Keen not to tell anyone how to play the game, Wardle also said: “I think, with this sort of game, part of the joy is discovering those things for yourself, right?

“So I’m reluctant to tell anybody how they should play. I would encourage people to experiment with different ideas and to find their own [starting] words, rather than just sticking to the same proven tactics over and over again.”
