Oscars nominations 2025: Biggest snubs and surprises

The nominees for the 2025 Academy Awards have finally been announced, with Wicked picking up a swag of nominations.

Hosted by Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and Bottoms actress Rachel Sennott hosted the nominations announcement at an event that was postponed due to the wildfires in Los Angeles.

The Oscars are considered one of the most prestigious awards in show business and cap off the busy awards season.

There has been much debate about whether the Academy Awards should take place at all this year, with many calling for the March 2 ceremony in Los Angeles to be canceled out of respect for the victims of the wildfires.

What To Know

Many of the expected frontrunners picked up nods in the major categories including the Adrien Brody-led The Brutalist, musical Wicked, and Emilia Perez, a movie about a transgender drug baron.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo picked up acting nominations for film adaptation of Wicked as did Brody for The Brutalist.

Oscar Snubs

But some movie fans believed there were some categories where major players failed to pick up a nomination.

While it was nominated for Best Film, the Jean-Luc Godard epic Dune 2 did not get shortlisted for Best Production Design or Makeup.

Elsewhere, some people were annoyed that the racy tennis film Challengers, starring Zendaya, did not receive a nod for Best Original Score.

Ralph Fiennes was nominated for Best Actor in the papal drama Conclave, but his co-star Stanley Tucci did not receive the Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Fans on social media also argued that superstar, Selena Gomez, should have been nominated for Emilia Perez, instead her co-star Zoe Saldaña was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She also won the Golden Globe for the same role

Oscar Surprises

One of the most highly anticipate categories of the morning was for Best Actress, with many potential opportunities for surprises or snubs.

Hollywood icon Demi Moore was nominated for her comeback role in The Substance and could be a hot favorite to win the trophy after also winning the Golden Globe.

One of her rivals in the category is Karla Sofía Gascón who made history today by becoming the first transgender actress nominated for Best Actress.
