A friend of Mamta Kafle Bhatt, the Virginia pediatric nurse and mother believed to be murdered by her estranged husband Naresh Bhatt, provided more insight Tuesday into the couple’s dynamic.

The Context

Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a 28-year-old nurse, went missing in July. Naresh Bhatt was arrested in August on a charge of concealing a dead body and now faces charges of murder and physically defiling a dead body after police found evidence in their Manassas Park home that her body was dismembered.

Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s body has yet to be found. Since his arrest, Naresh Bhatt has been held without bond in the Prince William County jail.

What To Know

Navarro told Grace about alleged instances where Naresh Bhatt, a U.S. Army veteran, would compare his wife to other women.

“He would do anything he could to make her feel less than. He would comment on her weight, he would compare her to other women. He would compare her to me in front of us,” Navarro said.

One particularly hurtful incident happened during a FaceTime call to Naresh Bhatt after the women did each other’s makeup.

“He looked at me and said, ‘Nadia, you’re like an A-plus,’ and then he turned to Mamta and said, ‘You’re like a C-minus,'” Navarro said.

Navarro said Mamta Kafle Bhatt reacted to the remark with a smile, then hung up and became emotional.

“She ran out of the room. And I followed her. And she was crying. And. And she told me that it was the first time he said something like that. And I told her she was beautiful,” Navarro said.

Mamta Kafle Bhatt Was ‘Out of Naresh’s League’

Both Naresh Bhatt and Mamta Kafle Bhatt are originally from Nepal. Navarro said their marriage was arranged “due to their culture.”

“He knew that under normal circumstances, she’s not the kind of person that he would be able to marry,” Navarro said, describing Mamta Kafle Bhatt as “beautiful, smart, and educated.”

“She was way out of his league,” she said. It made him jealous. It made him feel inferior.”

Navarro continued, “He didn’t have any degrees of his own…He couldn’t even pass the police academy–He failed that. And I mean, he was working at a gas station before he got the job that he says he had in cybersecurity.”

What People Are Saying

Nancy Grace on Tuesday: “I don’t understand that, how the husband can be so cruel and demeaning to the wife when she’s so clearly, as Nadia said, out of his league. Way out of his league.”

Psychologist Dr. John Delatorre on Crime Stories with Nancy Grace: “It’s gross. It’s disgusting. This man is less than human. If someone, especially a woman, has more power and more agency, then that man is going to do whatever he can to undermine it.”

What’s Next

Naresh Bhatt is expected to go to trial in September.
