Over the last few weeks, the San Francisco Giants were looked at as the favorites in the Corbin Burnes sweepstakes, but Burnes ultimately decided to head to the Arizona Diamondbacks instead.

Now the Giants need to pivot to another ace to slot into their rotation. One of the top options available is San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease.

FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently predicted the Giants to pursue a blockbuster deal for Cease after whiffing on Burnes. Cease is projected to sign a $108 million contract next winter, per Spotrac.

“Not dissimilar to the Corbin Burnes situation last winter, the San Diego Padres appear willing — even eager — to trade Dylan Cease ahead of his final season,” Kline wrote. “The Padres are no doubt hesitant to deal Cease within their own division, but if the Giants can put together a compelling return package, it would be negligent not to listen.

“San Francisco’s committed financial approach should lead to some confidence in their ability to extend Cease long term, even if it requires a bidding war in free agency.”

Cease would be a huge addition, but I’m not sure how likely it is. While the Padres are likely looking to dump him before he leaves in free agency, it’s unknown if they would be willing to trade him to a division contender.

Adding Cease would potentially give the Giants the edge over the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks. All of these teams have a way to go before they catch the Dodgers though.
